Surgeon
Dr Ronald Denis
Biography
Dr. Ronald Denis, graduate of Université de Montréal, joined Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur, after an impressive Fellowship in Traumatology in Detroit.
Joining Dr. Atlas’ team, he participated in the implementation of laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Denis, outgoing Head of the Department of Surgery at CIUSSS du Nord de l’Ile-de-Montréal (HSCM, Hôpital Fleury, Hôpital Jean-Talon) and Director of the Trauma Program at CIUSS NIM, has achieved major advances for the Department, both in Traumatology and in other disciplines.
In 2003, Dr. Denis had the great merit of obtaining for Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur the Da Vinci surgical robot, the first of its kind in Canada. The acquisition of the Da Vinci robot has enabled bariatric surgery to take off in a major way, as its use enables a surgical approach of unattainable precision using conventional laparoscopy.

Introduction to vertical gatrectomy (SLEEVE)
Vertical gastrectomy is a restrictive surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon will remove approximately 75% of the stomach. This will cause a decrease in the amount of food that can be ingested at one time.
The small gastric pouch will cause early satiety (feeling full faster), so the ability to ingest food will decrease. In addition, food will no longer pass through a certain part of the small intestine, which will reduce the absorption of calories and nutrients ingested.
The surgery will take approximately 2 hours
This is surgery that is performed by laparoscopy (5 or 6 small 1 to 3 cm incisions in the abdomen).
The usual length of hospital-stay after surgery: between 24 and 48 hours depending on the health condition.
Main side effects and risks
– Nausea and vomiting
– Blockage when eating
– Fatigue and lack of energy
– Vitamin deficiency and malnutrition
– Digestive difficulties
– Dumping syndrome
– Bleeding
– Digestive ulcer
– Wound infection
– Thrombophlebitis (clot in the legs)
– Chronic abdominal pain
– Internal and abdominal hernia
Complications are rare. To decrease the risk of complications and side effects, it is important to follow the indications and recommendations. It is strongly recommended that you do not smoke, do not drink while eating, limit alcohol consumption and significantly reduce your sugary food intake. Surgery is an effective tool that allows you to lose, on average, 60-70% of excess weight.
It will help improve and eliminate several associated health problems (diabetes, hypertension, etc.). You will have better results if this is combined with good eating habits and a varied physical activities program. It will be necessary to take vitamins and supplements after surgery to prevent certain nutritional deficiencies.
Introduction to Gastric bypass
Gastric bypass surgery is a restrictive surgery with a hypoabsorptive component. The surgeon will make a small gastric pouch to which he will reattach part of the small intestine.
The small gastric pouch will cause early satiety (feeling full faster), so the ability to ingest food will decrease. In addition, food will no longer pass through a certain part of the small intestine, which will reduce the absorption of calories and nutrients ingested.

Introduction to SADI
SADI is a surgery that usually complements the vertical gastrectomy and is done in a second stage. We are talking about a hypoabsorptive surgery.
Introduction to SASI
SADI is a surgery that usually complements the vertical gastrectomy and is done in a second stage. We are talking about a hypoabsorptive surgery.
Food will no longer pass through a certain part of the small intestine. There will be about 250 cm left where food can be absorbed. This surgery can be performed in people whose body mass index (BMI) is higher than 50 to begin with or if the associated health problems (diabetes, hypertension, etc.) are important and severe.
The distinctive feature of this procedure is that there is only one anastomosis (connection) and the pylorus is preserved. This can decrease surgical complications and improve comfort after the operation. There is no dumping syndrome with this procedure.
The surgery will take approximately 2 hours.
This is surgery that is performed by laparoscopy (5 or 6 small 1 to 3 cm incisions in the abdomen).
The usual length of hospital stay after surgery is between 24 and 48 hours depending on the health condition.
This surgery can be performed at the same time as the vertical gastrectomy for some patients. (SASI-S)

Meeting with the surgeon
Before scheduling an appointment for a surgery, an initial consultation with the surgeon is required.
To schedule this appointment, you do not need to present a consultation request.
The consultation with the surgeon is intended to establish or confirm the condition for which a surgical procedure may be needed. It is also intended to determine whether you are a candidate for a surgery in an environment such as the Centre de chirurgie Mont-Royal.
Fees for a surgery
Once you’ve met with the surgeon, if a procedure is needed and you decide to be operated at the Centre, you will receive a quote detailing the fees associated with completing the surgery.
Fees can vary for the same surgery from one patient to the next depending on additional expenses related to supplemental examinations or post-operation needs, which sometimes vary from one patient to another depending on their medical profiles.
Financing
You can pay the surgical fees by credit card. You can also finance your surgery through companies such as Medicard or Medical Credit, see their website for additional information.
Making an appointment
Note that no consultation request is needed to make an appointment with the surgeon in private. However, whether you already have a surgical consultation request, an initial consultation with the surgeon is necessary and mandatory.
The purpose of the consultation with the surgeon is to determine whether or not surgery is required.
